![]() It added so much to the concept of powers and responsibility. There’s such a strong sense of guilt, as well as acceptance and understanding, in this volume. Yet it also felt very unique in many ways, avoiding a lot of the cliches that come with an origin story being repeated for the hundredth time. It’s another one of DC’s young adult graphic novels, and you can feel that right from the start. Supergirl: Being Super is an origin story, that much is true. Not all of them good (for Kara that is, not for the reader). Sure, it had many of those elements, but it also pulled in so many other surprises. Kara’s journey is not a typical ‘teenage kid with powers’ tale, at least, it didn’t read that way to me. This is Mariko Tamaki’s writing we’re talking about, after all. Then again, I probably shouldn’t have been surprised. I’ve got to say, I was both surprised and impressed by how much Supergirl: Being Super affected me. Now she has to find out the cause of all this pain and loss – ideally before it brings about more damage to the town that she has come to love so much. Then the earthquake struck, changing her life forever. She had thought she’d found a happy balance to her life. Yet she’s also a teenage girl, and that brings with it a whole new set of problems. She’s a Kryptonian, and as such, while on earth she has strength, ability to fly, and so much more. Kara Danvers is a character that many a DC fan will recognize, if nothing else. Likewise, I had high hopes for Joelle Jones’ artwork. I knew right away I had to read it, as I loved what she did in She Hulk and other series. Fat Albert has two, not because it is necessary to have two on each flight, but because it is a small team on a tight schedule so there needs to be some redundancy in case one is injured or falls ill.įYI, in addition to normal flight duties, on a demonstration flight that included a JATO shot, it is the loadmasters in the back who pull the jettison T-handles to dump the spent rocket bottles following the intercom command of the pilot.Supergirl: Being Super is a graphic novel that immediately caught my attention thanks to the author behind it Mariko Tamaki. Lengthy training missions may be augmented with additional pilots and navigators.įor the logistical support missions Fat Albert is tasked with, there definitely needs to be a loadmaster in the crew. (which loadmasters are also trained to do).Ī normal crew for most missions contains at least one loadmaster, but depending on the amount of cargo and available personnel, it is fairly common to have two assigned. For example, a local area, post-maintenance check flight may fly with a minimum crew of two pilots, a flight engineer, and a first mechanic to assist with any items in the back-end such as opening hatches to ventilate smoke and fumes, manually cranking down landing gear in the event of a hydraulic failure, etc. Most crew-served aircraft like the C-130 fly with a standard number of personnel in each crew position, but that can change depending on the mission. Performing demonstrations is more of a byproduct of being part of the team. ![]() Fat Albert’s primary purpose is actually transporting spare parts, tools, and maintenance personnel from show to show. ![]()
